Two Things You Must Do Before Renovating Your House Exterior

If you want to do some renovation work on your house's exterior, here are two things you must do before you begin.

Use a gutter cleaning service

Over time, a house's gutters will fill up with airborne soil, as well as dead leaves and twigs. The blockages this debris can cause may be further compounded by the growth of moss inside the gutter. If your gutters are clogged up with this type of debris, you should have someone clean them shortly before you start renovating the exterior.

The reason for this is that when gutters are clogged, they can't do what they're designed to do. Instead, this water will pour over the gutters' edges and flow down the walls. This is never ideal, but it could be particularly problematic if it happens when you're doing renovation work on your house exterior.

If, for example, you replace the render or repaint the exterior walls and the gutters overflow when the render or paint is wet, the dirty rainwater will mix with these substances and the render or paint either won't dry properly (due to the extra moisture content) or may dry with small bits of dirt and other debris that was in the rainwater, resulting in a less aesthetically pleasing finish. By ensuring that the gutters are empty and clean before you do any work on the exterior, you can avoid having to redo your renovation work.

Make sure the ground around your house is stable

Another thing you must do is ensure that the ground around your home is stable. For example, if you'll be working on a part of the house that leads directly to your driveway and the driveway has a few cracks in it, you should fill these before the renovations start.

The reason for this is that you'll probably need to use a ladder or scaffold when working on the upper areas of your house. If the ground that you place this access equipment on is cracked or crumbling, then the equipment might not be safe for you to stand on for long periods. If after inspecting the ground around your house, you find that it does require repair, you should do this before the gutter cleaning professional is due to come, as they will most likely need to use a ladder to reach and clean out the gutters and may struggle to do their work safely if you haven't done these repairs.
